Biography of Stefan Weissner

Stefan was born in Berlin/Germany on December 6, 1970. He attended the Gabriele-von-Buelow-Highschool in Berlin-Tegel and got his "Abitur", the final German school degree, in 1990. Then he began to study Aerospace Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin. During his studies he had internships in different companies like Airbus (commercial airplane manufacturer) in Hamburg, Kraftwerk Union (gas turbine manufacturer) in Berlin and Hanseatische Luftwerft (general aviation maintenance) in Bremen. He took classes in Aerodynamics, Flight Mechanics and Propulsion Systems before he applied at UCSD and was admitted for a Ph.D.-program in Mechanical Engineering. Just before he came to CMRR he completed his "Studienarbeit", one of two big mandatory theses to write at the TU Berlin, which dealt with the A340 Flight Simulator located at the Aerospace Engineering Building.

From May until September 1997 he was writing his Diplom-thesis at the CMRR which dealt with airbearing modeling for subambient pressure tri- pad sliders. Therefore, he was using various CMRR facilities like the Phase Metrics DFHT and the Wyko optical profilometer. For his airbearing modeling work he received an IDEMA fellowship in 1997.

Stefan is still working with the finite element airbearing simulator and has done some investigations on the effect of viscous shear on the flying behavior. He was taking classes in finite elements and fluid dynamics during the last year at UCSD. During the summer of 1997 he is going to work as an engineering intern for Seagate Technology.

Stefan likes to watch and play soccer. His favorite German team is Borussia Dortmund, the German champion of '95 and '96.

On May 28 1997, Borussia Dortmund won the final of the European Champions League in Munich 3-1 against Juventus Turin.
