Biography of Robin Swain

Robin is originally from St.Helens, a small town near Liverpool in England. He moved to London in 1984 to attend University. He received a class one honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the City University, London in 1988 (for information on London, click here). He worked in the research and development section of GEC Installation Equipment, and as a design engineer for Thames Water Authority, for a short period, before moving to the Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics Department of City University to study for a doctorate degree, which was awarded in September 1993.

In June 1994, Robin moved to the Centre for Magnetic Recording Research at the University of California, San Diego, where he worked on various projects. He worked with Tom McMillan on the heterodyne interferometer for flying height measurements and Eric Baugh on an interferometric helical scan project. His own project, for StorageTek of Colorado, was the development of an interferometer to measure the head/tape spacing of a high performance helical scanner.

Robin now works for Western Digital in Irvine.
