Sookyung Kim was born in Seoul, Korea, 1957. He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea. From 1984 until coming to UCSD in 1995, he worked on the development of VCR mechanisms and digital VCR's at the Image & Media Laboratory, LG electronics, Inc. Dr. Kim is presently a Visiting Scholar, working with Prof. Frank E.Talke in the Department of Applied Mechanics and Engineering Sciences (AMES), University of California, San Diego. He is interested in contact mechanics, tribology and the head/media interface. His current research interests are head clogging and contamination mechanisms, and design optimization of head contour in helical scan system.
