Lijun was born in Hebei, China, and grew up in a boarding school. In 1984, she went to study in Peking University , majoring in chemistry. After graduation with a B.Sc degree in 1988, she started her career as a chemical engineer in the Tianjin Research Institute of Chemical Industry, Ministry of Chemical Industry, China. As a successful R&D engineer in the area of inorganic chemistry she went to Belgium in February, 1994, to do research in the Universite Catholique de Louvain (UCL), Louvain-la-Neuve, with a fellowship from the United Nations Industry Organization. In 1995, she joined Prof. Schoonheydt's group in the Department of Interface Chemistry, Katholieke Unverseit Leuven (KUL), and got her Masters degree there in 1996. Now she is a visiting scholar in CMRR, performing research on thin film lubricated disks. A resume is available.
