Biography of Thorsten Frank

Thorsten was born in Marburg/Germany on December 16, 1969. He attended elementary school (Kaestnerschule) from 1975-1982 and highschool (Goethe-Schule) until 1989 in Wetzlar. He got his "Abitur"(A-levels) in 1989. After the time in the military he began to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) from Oct. 1990, "Vordiplom" finished in Oct. 1992, "Diploma" finished in Oct. 1995. During his studies he had internships in different companies:
Internships
July-Aug. 89 internship in the military service
June-Aug. 90 internship with FRANK METALLBAU in Solms, Germany, to get a insight into metal working methods
Jan.-March 95 internship with GEOSA in Karlsruhe, Germany, to get an insight into the area of design
1990-1995 several occupations in the area of design at the Institute for Machine Tools and Production Science at Karlsruhe University (TH)
He took classes in machine tools, manufacturing technology, quality management and completed his studies writing two thesis: After finishing the studies in mechanical engineering at Karlsruhe University (TH), he has been a Research Assistant at the Institute of Machine Tools and Production Sciences (wbk) at Karlsruhe University (TH), comparabale to the Ph.D.-program in Mechanical Engineering. The Institute led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. H. Weule and Prof. Dr.-Ing. D. Spath, focuses on the field of production engineering. Extensive research activities ranging from manufacturing technology via drive techniques, handling engineering, to production management and quality management are carried out by 45 scientists organized in five research groups.

His studies and post-graduate work on industry-oriented projects at his institute, has enabled him to develop a solid knowledge of static and dynamic analysis and optimization of machine tools and special components. Recent research projects in which he is involved deal with the development of finite-element tools to improve the dynamic behavior of complex mechanical structures by means of topology and shape optimization. Further interests are dealing with setting up a high dynamic feed axis based on ball screw drive together with a driven nut. Momentarily, he is a visiting scholar at CMRR at UCSD for half a year. His current project deals with the static and dynamic analysis and optimization of the mechanical structure of a hard disk drive.
