Simulation of Pole Tip Protrusion (PTP)
In order to increase the recording density in hard disk drives, the flying height must be reduced. Pole Tip Protrusion is a thermal effect which is mostly experienced as a disadvantage because the protruded Pole tip can damage the disk or the slider during unintentional contact.
However, PTP can also be used to decrease the distance between the pole tip and the disk. This allows to focusing the magnetic field on a smaller area, and hence increasing the recording density. This research project deals with the numerical simulation of the PTP using a finite element method approach.
