Biography of Lin Zhou

Lin Zhou received his BS in 1989 from Xian Jiaotong University. After working as a mechanical engineer in an engine plant for one year, he returned to Xian Jiaotong University and got his MS in 1993 in the field of tribology of ceramics. He then studied in the Department of Materials Science at Tsinghua University as a Ph.D. candidate in the field of thin film physics. After one year, he obtained a scholarship from Japanese government and joined the Tribology Laboratory at Tohoku University in 1994. He restarted his Ph.D. program in 1995 under the direction of Prof. K. Kato in the field of micro-tribology for magnetic recording. His Ph.D. research was in cooperation with Hitachi Ltd. Japan. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1999. After working as a research associate for about one year in Tohoku University, he then joined the Mechanics and Tribology Laboratory of Prof. Talke at Center for Magnetic Recording Research (CMRR) at UCSD. Dr. Zhou’s research interests are in the area of tribology of the head/disk interface of hard disk drives, specifically, on the tribology of textured sliders under near contact situations.
