Biography of Bernhard Knigge
Bernhard Knigge was born in Bremen, Germany.
Already in high school he specialized in physics and economics. Bernhard
studied Physics at the Technical University Munich and as part of the Diploma
degree, he conducted one year of research in the Physics Department at
UCSD and wrote his master's thesis about superconducting thin films.
At present, Bernhard is pursuing a Ph.D.
in Engineering Sciences (Mechanical Engineering) at the CMRR at UCSD. His
research involves the tribological, mechanical and dynamic aspects of slider
disk contacts in near contact recording systems.
In particular, Bernhard investigates transient
slider disk contacts using time frequency analysis and wavelet transform.
Ultra high resolution of glide slider contacts can be achieved by using
the re-assigned Gabor distribution. Furthermore, Bernhard is calculating
contact forces of slider disk contacts using acoustic emission methods
and laser Doppler vibrometry. This research involves finite element simulation
and modal analysis. For more details, check out Bernhard's resume
and the current research page.
Bernhard likes San Diego and California
a lot. The sunny weather, the ocean and the nearby deserts are very appealing
to him. But he is missing his friends from Germany. Outside the lab he
is doing a lot of sports. His main hobbys are fitness, scuba diving, skydiving,
hiking, Taekwon Do, basketball and of course cars.
