Biography of Bart Raeymaekers
Bart was born on February 1st 1980 in Brussels, Belgium and grew up in Asse, a town 15 km north of Brussels.
After graduating from high
school in 1998 he studied industrial engineering option electro-mechanics (ing.)
at KaHo St. Lieven in Ghent,
Belgium, where he graduated in 2002. During the 01-02 academic year, he was a
member of the international Siemens
student program and he did an internship at the Siemens "Automation & Drives"
research center in Erlangen,
Germany.
From 2002 to 2004, Bart got his masters degree in mechanical engineering (ir.) at the
Vrije Universiteit Brussel
through the 2 year condensed program for industrial engineers, his masters thesis
was titled: "Study of cooling and lubrication systems for high speed milling of titanium".
Bart joined the Talkelab at UCSD in September 2004 as a graduate student and received his M.S. degree
from the University of California, San Diego in June 2005. During the 04-05
academic year, he was sponsored by a fellowship of the Belgian American Educational Foundation and the Francqui
Foundation. In 2006, Bart received the Barbara J. and Paul D. Saltman excellent teaching award, the ASME-ISPS fellowship and the outstanding graduate student award. Bart finished his PhD in mechanical engineering in June 2007, and is now pursuing an MBA degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technoloy, Sloan School of Management, in Cambridge, MA. Bart's current research interests are contact mechanics, design of precision actuators and nano-tribology.
Outside of school Bart is a
cyclist (competition).
